Sally in the Zen

Confessions of a Befuddled Zen Buddhist

Damn Allergies

On one recent morning, I walked out into the brisk morning air, and took a deep breath of that fresh morning goodness.

And promptly sneezed.

Damn allergies.

I ran back into the house to take a Claritin.  But I had finished it a couple of days before and completely forgot to go to the drugstore.  So I grabbed the only thing that was available in the house.

Zen Mum’s Zyrtec.

No worries.  After all, allergy medicine was allergy medicine, right?

Right.

But something strange was happening.  In fact, it was happening all day.

Through my lunching, my snacking and my many nibbling throughout the day.

And when I sat down for dinner that evening, I finally figured it out.

“I can’t taste anything!”  I blurted out, my fork still in my hand.  I looked at Zen Master and Zen Mum, completely aghast.  “I can’t taste my food!”

Zen Mum asked, “Is it your allergies?”

“Did you take Claritin?”  asked Zen Master.

I explained what happened, which medicine I took and now the end result.

I’m a blooming and budding food blogger wannabe!  What the heck am I going to do if I can’t taste my food?

I MUST TASTE FOOD.

I MUST ENJOY MY STRONG BOLD STARBUCKS COFFEE.

I MUST BE ABLE TO ENJOY PIZZA!

And I gotta Zen and turn off the Caps Lock.

Zen Master continued to enjoy his dinner, food which I completely disremembered because I was too distraught.  In between his bites, he suggested that maybe Zyrtec was just not a good fit for me.

I pondered this for a bit before going out and getting more Claritin.

And wouldn’t you know it?

Zen Master was completely right.  Claritin not only subdued my damn allergies but brought back my taste buds!

Oh my tastebuds!  How art thou??

*sniff*  *sniff*

*sniffle*

For a moment there, I thought my dreams of being a food blogger wannabe was floating away.

This is just too much drama for my heart to handle.

I need to go meditate.
